Steffen Peters' Tailcoat

September 18, 2009

Peters and RavelIf you are fortunate enough to see 2009 FEI World Cup Winner Steffen Peters riding in person, take a closer look at his tailcoat. It may not be as sleek as you would expect. Many top athletes around the world have superstitions and set routines they adhere to before competition.

World leading dressage rider Steffen Peters is no exception – but his ‘quirk’ is somewhat more visible than most people’s lucky socks. Peters rode in is first international competition aged 16. Having just celebrated his 45th birthday, it is somewhat remarkable when he reveals that he has never competed in any dressage tails other than that original set, dating back to 1980.

“They are one of my most prized possessions and for sure it is part superstition and part affection to this tailcoat which means I just can’t bring myself to ride in any other tails.”

He admits there is a downside as the design of his tails is an older style and they are made of heavier fabric than more modern versions."

Peters “At Hong Kong was where I really noticed it. They are so heavy and hot compared to the light fabrics they make in Hong Kong. They make amazing tails there and someone got me a pair custom made, but I just couldn’t bring myself to change this habit of a lifetime!

“This tailcoat has been patched up and fixed so many times,” said Peters. “It has been taken apart. I remember at Aachen in 2005 with Floriano. He was going a bit crazy and I grabbed his neck, but he grabbed me and pretty much pulled the whole arm off my tailcoat!
“It had a huge rip in it but luckily my mom sewed it up for me that night. It has certainly seen some miles and is one of my most precious possessions.”
