(Foto: Gabriele Boiselle)At their meeting at the turn of the year, the board members of the European State Studs Association (ESSA) drew a positive balance of the past year. 2009 was a successful year for the network of the European state studs. Its seat at the Principal and State Stud Marbach (Germany) started operating and the association was officially registered as non-profit organisation. At the General Assembly at the Slovakian National Stud Topolcianky the stud directors signed the “Declaration on the Preservation of Traditional Brands”.

One of ESSAs main objectives is the recognition of the European state studs as “European Cultural Heritage”. The association is in close contact with the authorities in Brussels, and is actively involved in the development of the future European Heritage Label.

In 2010 ESSA plans to update its website, to establish information units at all partner studs and to participate in different events. On 28th of April, the “Day of Biodiversity”, several studs present horses of endangered breeds at the European Parliament and in a parade through Strasbourg city (France). From the 21st to the 25th of July ESSA will be present at the international horse fair “Eurocheval” in Offenburg (Germany), in November an exhibition in Brussels (Belgium) is in preparation. The next General Assembly will take place in June in the Principal and State Stud of Neustadt-Dosse (Germany).

At the beginning of 2010 ESSA counts 16 of the most prestigious European studs as members, amongst them are the National studs Le Pin and Pompadour (France), Lipica (Slovenia), Kladruby nad Labem (Czech Republic), Bábolna (Hungary) and Flyinge (Sweden). The numbers of institutional and personal members is growing. From summer on individuals will have the opportunity to join ESSA as supporting members. With a donation you can support ESSAs activities already today and thus contribute to the preservation of the cultural heritage of the European state studs.

Background:
The European State Studs Association evolved from a loose network of stud directors with annual meetings for the exchange of experience and know-how. The aim of the organisation is the preservation of the cultural heritage of the European state studs. ESSAs seat is the Principal and Federal Stud Marbach (Germany). The activities of the network are coordinated by the culture manager Alexandra Lotz. The director of Marbach, Dr. Astrid Von Velsen-Zerweck, is part of the ESSA board. President of the ESSA is Bernard Maurel (Les Haras Nationaux, France).
